Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready:
- Your VR headset fully charged (at least 50%)
- A USB-C cable (data-capable, not charge-only)
- A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- A developer account (free to create)
Step 1: Enable Developer Mode
Developer Mode unlocks the ability to install apps from outside the official store. Here's how to enable it:
- Open the companion app on your phone
- Go to Settings → Device → Developer Mode
- Toggle Developer Mode to ON
- Restart your headset when prompted
If you don't see the Developer Mode option, you may need to register as a developer first. This is free and only takes a minute — visit the developer portal and create an organization.
Step 2: Install a Sideloading Tool
The easiest way to sideload is through a desktop app like SideQuest. Download and install it on your computer:
- Visit the SideQuest website and download the installer for your OS
- Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions
- Launch SideQuest once installation is complete
Step 3: Connect Your Headset
Plug your headset into your computer using the USB-C cable. When you put on your headset, you should see a prompt asking you to Allow USB Debugging. Tap "Allow" and optionally check "Always allow from this computer."
Tip: If SideQuest shows "No device detected," try a different USB cable. Many cables are charge-only and don't support data transfer.
Step 4: Install the APK
Now you're ready to install an app:
- In SideQuest, click the "Install APK from file" button (folder icon in the top toolbar)
- Browse to the APK file you downloaded
- Select the file and click Open
- Wait for the installation to complete — you'll see a success message
Step 5: Find Your Sideloaded App
Sideloaded apps don't appear in the main library by default. To find them:
- Open your app library in the headset
- In the top-right dropdown, change from "All" to "Unknown Sources"
- Your sideloaded app will appear here — tap to launch!
You're All Set!
Congratulations — you've sideloaded your first app! From here, you can explore indie games, beta releases, and custom tools that aren't available in the main store. If you run into any issues, check our Common Sideloading Errors & Fixes guide.
